Building Positive Body Image and Self-Esteem

It seems to become worse each year, and for the last half a dozen decades women from all over the world have been shouting out "Give us a break". But the magazines and blogs are being supercharged by the very well-groomed and photoshopped influencers.

While even the smallest of blemishes or an up-and-coming pimple getting ready to party on your cheek will make most of us run to the bathroom, there are other things we need to do to take care of our real selves.

Below you are going to find some ideas for you to ponder over, but if you need more serious help and support, please contact one of the life coaches for women we have on our website.

Step 1: Recognize and challenge negative thoughts

The first step towards building positive body image and self-esteem is to recognize and challenge negative thoughts. Notice when negative thoughts arise about your body, and challenge them with positive affirmations and self-talk. Focus on your strengths and positive qualities, and avoid comparing yourself to others.

Step 2: Practice self-compassion

Self-compassion is an essential component of building positive body image and self-esteem. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, and avoid self-criticism or negative self-talk. Cultivate a sense of acceptance and forgiveness towards yourself, and focus on your intrinsic worth as a person.

Step 3: Surround yourself with positivity

Surrounding yourself with positivity can help boost your self-esteem and body image. Seek out supportive friends and family members who encourage and uplift you, and avoid toxic relationships that bring you down. Surround yourself with positive affirmations and messages that inspire and motivate you.

Step 4: Focus on health, not appearance

Focusing on health, rather than appearance, can help shift your perspective and boost your self-esteem. Focus on nourishing your body with healthy foods and exercise, rather than obsessing over your appearance or weight. Make self-care a priority, and focus on feeling good from the inside out.

Step 5: Avoid negative triggers

Avoiding negative triggers can help protect your self-esteem and body image. Limit exposure to media that promotes unrealistic beauty standards, and unfollow social media accounts that make you feel bad about yourself. Surround yourself with positive messages and influences, and focus on building your own unique style and image.

Step 6: Practice self-care

Practicing self-care is an essential component of building positive body image and self-esteem. Take time to care for your body and mind, with activities like exercise, meditation, or massage. Develop a self-care routine that works for you, and make it a priority in your daily life.

Step 7: Develop a support system

Developing a support system can help boost your self-esteem and body image. Seek out support from friends, family, or professionals who can provide guidance, encouragement, and validation. Join a support group or online community that focuses on body positivity and self-love.

Step 8: Cultivate gratitude

Cultivating gratitude can help shift your perspective towards positivity and boost your self-esteem. Take time to appreciate the positive aspects of your life and your body, and focus on what you have, rather than what you lack. Practice gratitude journaling or meditation to cultivate a sense of thankfulness and contentment.

Step 9: Learn to accept compliments

Learning to accept compliments can help boost your self-esteem and body image. Rather than deflecting compliments or downplaying your accomplishments, learn to accept them graciously and acknowledge your strengths. Use positive affirmations to reinforce your self-worth and build your confidence.

Step 10: Seek professional help

If you're struggling with negative body image or low self-esteem, seeking professional help can be an important step towards healing and growth. Consider seeing a therapist or counsellor who specializes in body image and self-esteem issues, and explore self-help resources like books or online courses. Remember, it's never too late to start building a positive relationship with your body and yourself.
